If only Ahaziah had followed his grandfather Jehoshaphat’s example. There’s no record that Ahaziah ever “inquired of the Lord.”

Quite the contrary. All we have is a three-fold repetition of the opposite:

  • “…his mother was his counselor to do wickedly.” 1
  • “he did evil… like the house of Ahab, for they were his counselors…” 2
  • “he also walked according to the counsel of the house of Ahab.”3

I’m not the sharpest knife in the drawer… but when something’s repeated three times, I try to sit up and take notice.

All this has gotten me thinking about the subject of counselors. Counselors are influencers. They help us process our situations and make life choices.

So here’s what I’m wondering. What sort of counselors are influencing and advising us? More to the point, how much counsel are we receiving from TV, music, movies, friends, the internet, and books we’re reading?

I’m certainly not advocating a monastic lifestyle. But here’s an important question: Is the enemy using these to “counsel me to do wickedly?” Something to think about!

If we don’t do anything else right this week, let’s make sure we choose godly counselors.
