What a sinking feeling to see your investment tank. To watch your cash evaporate into thin air right before your eyes. To realize your ROI—return on investment—will be… zilch!
“Hezekiah gave no return for the benefit he received, because his heart was proud.” 1
Unbelievable! After all God had invested in Hezekiah—the abundance and blessing and prosperity and honor… not to mention deliverance from 185,000 Assyrians! Now this! What must God have felt watching His investment yield no return? “He gave no return for the benefit he received…”
You were running well, Hezekiah. You had an amazing track record of trust and faith! What hindered you?
He must’ve lost sight of the fact of his absolute dependency on God. Of his constant and utter need of Him. That everything he had received came from God.2 He must’ve assumed that he himself had something to do with his success and prosperity and greatness. “He gave no return for the benefit he received…”
Lord, in what ways am I giving You no return for all that you’ve invested in me? Right now I choose to humble myself before You—to recognize my inadequacy and Your sufficiency; to honor You as my sustainer, provider, enabler. I bow my knee and my will to You, Sovereign Lord. And I purpose anew that today You will receive the investment benefit You are due from my life.
2 1 Corinthians 4:7 “What do you have that you did not receive?”
