Please allow me to state the obvious:
- It was GOD who performed the miracle (parted the Jordan River).
- It was the PEOPLE who prepared the memorial (12 stones).
If you had been in God’s place and performed that miracle, how might you have handled this whole memorial thing?
- Would you have settled for just any 12 river rocks the men chose and could carry as a memorial?
- Would you have given some directives as to the rocks’ placement and prominence?
- How about instructions for upkeep of the memorial?
- Would you have directed regular visitations to the memorial? maybe a pilgrimage?
- How about some teaching sessions?
- In short, would you have left so much about the memorial to the people?
I think there are some pretty important lessons here about God, us, and memorials. So that’s what we’ll be talking about this Sunday in our Zoom Bible study. We’ll be in Joshua 4 and I’d like to ask you to read it ahead of time. Please give some thought to different ways we memorialize things these days. And also to why. I look forward to seeing you at 10:45 Sunday!
