You are probably familiar with the Hebrew word chesed, which is often translated “lovingkindness,” or “steadfast love.”
Four times in Genesis we come across chesed in the same sentence with emmeth, which is usually translated as “faithfulness.”
Separately, these two words occur many times in the Bible. Each is powerful and packed with meaning in its own right. But when the two words are found together they deliver an especially loaded punch. We find these two words together thirty times in the Old Testament. Most often they are describing God’s character or attributes, though sometimes they are speaking of the godly character of His devoted followers.
To get your heart and mind in gear for our worship, give some consideration to these Scriptures which speak of God’s chesed and emmeth:
- Genesis 24:27
- Genesis 32:11
- Exodus 34:6
- Psalm 40:11
- Psalm 57:10
- Psalm 86:15
Do you have a testimony you’d like to share with the rest of us about how God has shown you His lovingkindness and faithfulness? Or what kind of impact these have had on you?
