To fit him for the kingdom, God changed Saul’s heart (1 Sam 10:9).
Why would God need to change his heart? Simply put, because the condition of Saul’s heart—just like every other human’s heart—was very grave. “The heart is deceitful; it is desperately sick,” says God. (Jer 17:9) Our hearts are hard (Ps 95:8), unclean, and defiled (Mt 15:19-20).
So God did a wonderful thing for the new king of His people—He changed his heart.
And in doing this, I believe God gave us a point of intercession. We can ask God to change our hearts as well. “Lord, You changed Saul’s heart; would You please change mine?”
And now that the Holy Spirit resides within Christ’s followers, there’s no question God is at work to change our hearts! It’s absolutely appropriate to appeal to Him for a changed heart!
Change my heart oh God
Make it ever true
Change my heart oh God
May I be like You
You are the potter
I am the clay
Mold me and make me
This is what I pray
Change my heart oh God
Make it ever true
Change my heart oh God
May I be like You.
