Do you know the proverbial checklist banks use to decide whether or not they should make a loan to someone? Everything hinges on repayment, of course. So here are the questions they ask to qualify a person for a loan:
1. Can he pay?
2. Does he pay?
3. Can he be made to pay?
As we have been working our way through Ephesians I have been thinking about my sin-debt in banking terms, and imagining that banker-checklist-conversation with regard to me:
1. Can he pay [that sin debt]?
Nope! He’s penniless.
2. Does he pay [that sin debt]?
Are you kidding? He’s never paid back the first cent!
3. Can he be made to pay [that sin debt]?
You can’t squeeze blood out of a turnip! He possesses nothing of value that we could attach.
No bank would’ve touched me with a ten-foot pole. And the Lord shouldn’t have either, because repayment of my sin debt was an absolute impossibility.
But God…!
Even when I was in debt up to my eyeballs, and even though the prospect of repayment was an utter impossibility, God took my sin debt and placed it on His Son. And that’s how I came to be a debt-free child of God.
Praise God!
