For the last couple of weeks Barb and I have been picking up on some really offensive odors in our home. We’ve been regularly checking our shoes and sniffing our shirts… but still haven’t been able to pinpoint the source. At times it has smelled like we live downwind from a waste-water treatment plant.
The other day we finally discovered the problem. A small flapper valve leading to our septic system had failed and… well, you can imagine why we were using clothespins on our noses. I’m guessing it was no more than a three-dollar flapper valve.
Isn’t it amazing how a three-dollar flapper valve can get your attention? A whole bunch of seemingly more important projects suddenly took a back seat to the three-dollar flapper valve.
This has gotten me thinking… I wonder how much more serious I’d be about matters of spiritual decay and rottenness in my life if they gave off an odor like we’ve been smelling around our home lately. I’ll bet I’d move them much more quickly up the priority list!
Lord, I know my rotten attitudes, thoughts, and actions are a real stench in Your nostrils. Yet… I manage to tolerate them so well! How is that!? Please increase my spiritual sensitivity to those things You find offensive… Give me enough revulsion to them so I adjust my priorities and don’t allow them to remain.
