Obeying God’s Voice

Obeying God’s Voice

We will serve the LORD our God and we will obey his voice.

Joshua 24:24

If you’ve been looking for a life-verse, you just found it!

Or maybe you’re like me and you already have a boat-load of life-verses, but you still have room in your heart to treasure yet another great verse to challenge you and keep you going in the right direction.

Joshua was near the end of his life and had just given his final challenge to the people of Israel: “Choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve . . . but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”

And they answered Joshua: We will serve the LORD our God and we will obey His voice.

I find words like these come to my aid in moments of crisis or temptation or need, especially if I’ve committed them to memory. (That’s why I so regularly challenge you to memorize Scriptures like these!)

Consider how these words would come to your aid if you should be:

Staring at both a broken-down car and an empty bank account: Father, I don’t know how to solve this problem. Anxiety and fear are knocking loudly at my door. But I have committed to obeying Your voice, not the voice of fear. So what does my LORD have to say to His servant at this juncture? I will obey You.

In the grip of temptation: Lord, my passions and desires feel overpowering right now and I feel very weak . . . but I choose to serve You, not my passions, and to obey Your voice right now and flee this temptation.

Discouraged and contemplating throwing in the towel: Lord, I’m tired and feel like giving up. But You say not to become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. So I will obey Your voice and press on with Your help.

May the Lord use Joshua 24:24 to deepen your resolve and strengthen your obedience.
