Life’s Essentials

Life’s Essentials

For the last week my phone has been on the fritz and in the repair shop. What I thought would be a minor day or two’s inconvenience has turned into a week-long productivity debacle.

I can’t believe how much of what I do is tied to that thing: scheduling, note-taking, exercise, weather, banking… I wished for it just now so I could use a thesaurus in writing this article! And may I also mention Bible study? Surely this spiritual dimension lends legitimacy to my phone dependency, don’t you think?

“How in the world did I function without this thing 15 years ago? It’s become so… essential!” I heard myself saying.

Which led me to think about what kinds of things truly are essential (such as food). And the very next words that came to me were those of Jesus: “Man shall not live by bread alone but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God” (Mt 4:4).

And next came the penetrating question: Is God’s Word at least as essential as my phone? Because if I’ve forgotten my phone, I’ll readily turn around and go back home to retrieve it. It’s that important. Do I feel such an acute need for God to speak to me through His Word? Daily?

Something to think about!
