Then He opened their minds to understand the Scriptures…
You wouldn’t think it possible (but apparently it is) to have read the Scriptures all your life and yet failed to grasp a central aspect of its message.
But here were the disciples on Resurrection Day—completely baffled by what had just taken place. Stunned speechless. And central to their utter bewilderment seems to have been the fact of Jesus’ suffering. So twice on that day He had to tell them: it was necessary for the Christ to suffer; it was written that the Christ should suffer (Luke 24:26, 46).
Then He opened their minds to understand the Scriptures. That must have been just as amazing as having their eyes opened so they could recognize Him! *
So as we come to yet another Resurrection Day celebration, I’m asking the Lord to open my mind to understand the Scriptures. What have I failed to see, or to see clearly, despite the hundreds of times I have read them? Where have I been foolish and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken? In what ways have I failed to see and recognize Him fully?
Lord Jesus, on this Easter I implore You to open my eyes as never before, that I may see You clearly. And open my mind wherever it’s closed, to understand more fully the Scriptures about You.
