I saw this sign in a restaurant recently and found myself chuckling. I thought it was cute.
It’s a joke, of course, but it makes you stop and think. I mean, have you ever heard a more vivid expression of divided affection? And really, is there anything more dangerous to a relationship than a divided heart?
To paraphrase Jesus, any kingdom divided against itself is doomed to fall, 1 for no one can have two top priorities. 2
Realizing this principle, the psalmist prayed, “Give me an undivided heart.” 3
Mark Altrogge wrote a contemporary version of that prayer:
Give me one pure and holy passion
Give me one magnificent obsession
Jesus, give me one glorious ambition for my life
To know and follow hard after You 4
I find there is always something or someone vying for my chief affection. And, sadly, I am all too inclined to succumb. What a plague is this divided-heart syndrome!
Let’s ask God for an undivided heart—one that loves Him with all our heart and soul and mind and strength! 5
