Hard times. Difficult days. And a truly dismal tomorrow.
Such was the sorry state of the people of Judah when God promised them that a bright and beautiful future lay ahead. He detailed numerous blessings and benefits that would be theirs, and then He gave the reason why:
For I satisfy the weary ones and refresh everyone who languishes. (Jeremiah 31:25)
By beginning this statement with “For,” He conveyed to every generation of His followers these timeless truths about His character:
(a) He satisfies the weary.
(b) He refreshes those who languish.
(c) He refreshes everyone who languishes, not just some.
Are you in the midst of hard times and difficult days? Does tomorrow seem even more bleak?
Because of the “For” at the beginning of verse 25, you absolutely can be assured that God is absorbed with your plight as one of His followers who is weary and languishing. And that He lovingly satisfies the weary and refreshes the languishing. It’s just who He is.
Note: You and I are not free to claim every promise that God was giving to Judah in Jeremiah 31 (verse 12, for example: “they shall come and shout for joy on the height of Zion”). However, after God gave those promises to Judah, He gave the reason for the promises based on His own character: “For (because) I satisfy the weary ones and refresh everyone who languishes.” This statement about His character is why His followers in every age have confidence that He will satisfy the weary and refresh those who languish.
