What would you be thinking if an angel were to appear to you one night in a dream, and address you by your name, and by your ancestor from 27 generations ago?
In Matthew 1:19, that’s exactly what happened to Joseph one night as he was sleeping. He’d been deliberating about a troubling matter concerning his wife-to-be, Mary. And the angel addressed him in a dream, “Joseph, son of David,…”
David was, indeed, Joseph’s ancestor, but from 27 generations ago! So why would the angel bring that up, and why at this particular juncture of Mary’s pregnancy?
With the Lord’s help, I think we’ll gain some insight on why the angel addressed Joseph this way, as well as what this means for us.
